Designing Mechanical 3D Metamaterials with Tension-Active Modules

Material: 1mm MDF, Tyvec sheet
Date: 2024

Paper Publication

This research is a novel approach to making mechanical metamaterials. It uses two-dimensional cutting of flat materials to create designed planar modules, and then connects joints and assembles these modules to form 3D structures with specific mechanisms. This approach expands a novel way to use 2D machining to fabricate mechanical materials and allows for practical fabrication on a furniture scale. We believe this research will make a worthwhile contribution to the field of computational design and fabrication.
