Water Surface II

The undulations of the water’s surface arise from the continuous interplay of tension among water molecules. What appear to be gentle, tranquil ripples are, in fact, the result of countless subtle forces pulling against and balancing one another beneath the surface.
This artwork is created using Tension-Active Form, an original form-making technique in which numerous specially designed planar paper modules are transformed and assembled. Each module incorporates a predefined tension structure. Under tension, its boundaries are pulled and bent, gradually transforming the flat surface into a three-dimensional form with gentle undulations. As these modules connect along their boundaries, tension is transmitted and redistributed between them, ultimately generating a continuous, undulating surface reminiscent of water.
These modules serve not only as structural units but also as metaphors for the existence of water molecules—independent of one another, yet inseparable from the whole. To contemplate this Water Surface is, in a sense, to observe a reflection of human society. Each module resembles an individual, possessing its own form, background, and conditions of tension. Yet, as they connect and come together, they form an inseparable collective structure.
In this artwork, tension is not merely a physical means of shaping material; it points toward a deeper question: What unseen forces and underlying order shape the existence of individuals and society? Though these forces may remain invisible, it is through their continuous interplay that we become connected, and that individuals collectively form a vast blue surface of water—constantly changing, yet held together through mutual tension.
