This is the earliest method developed for shaping fabric. Because fabric is soft, difficult to control, and unable to stand on its own, it requires an added skeletal structure to improve its controllability. In this approach, a planar frame is added to the fabric as a boundary “bone,” and by connecting predetermined nodes, the fabric can be deformed from a flat surface into a three-dimensional form. The overall structure also gains sufficient strength to stand independently. This series of square-frame designs later became the prototype for the Tension Module forming method.
