Tension-Active Form |
Tension-Active Form is a three-dimensional shaping method that Lyu has been exploring since 2018, and it was further deepened and expanded during his doctoral studies from 2022 to 2025. This technique applies tensile forces to planar materials—such as paper, thin wooden sheets, or woven fabrics with low elasticity—causing them to deform under tension and transform from a two-dimensional surface into a three-dimensional form. The resulting structures not only possess self-supporting strength but also exhibit inherent transformability. By altering the internal node connections, the form can shift between different dimensional states.
The creativity and spirituality behind Tension-Active Form are rooted in Lyu’s childhood faith. He believes that the universe was stretched out like a great canopy by God (Isaiah 40), with abundant life unfolding upon it. Although invisible to the naked eye, tensile forces are omnipresent in shaping the world around us—the spider’s web, the trembling wings of insects, the deformation of the earth’s crust, the undulation of water surfaces. The humble yet powerful nature of tension—always present yet hiding itself—draws Lyu to seek the Creator behind it, whose character reflects the same quiet strength.
Lyu continues to explore the possibilities of Tensioned Forming and has already developed multiple outcomes, including Tension Modules, Tension Canvas, and Tension Pleats.
